Zvonejske njivi

Zvonejske njivi (Zvonejska Fields) are a lesser known monument of rural architecture culture than the famous Bakarski prezidi, but not less striking. Their formation is difficult to pinpoint, according to some knowledge dating between XV. and XVII. century. These are agricultural areas prepared by the diligent work of many generations of zvonejsk Krai farmers. They are located next to the village of Zvoneća, partly along the village of Sušnji and towards Škalniški and their southwestern edge is crossed by the main road Zvoneća – Mune. They comprise about sixty acres of land and are at an elevation of 300 to 450 meters above sea level. Today, only 30% of the area (10-15 Ha) is cultivated , but the presidium is located almost in the entire area, i.e. where it used to be. On the areas that are cultivated and the presidium are still maintained so that they are in quite good condition, but on the neglected land time and nature do their part and slowly swallow this centuries-old monument of the work of zvonejski peasants.

On the stone terraces of Zvoneće, the area of the municipality of Matulji, known as" zvonejske njivi " viticulture was an important branch of Agriculture. A variety of masts has been present in this area for more than a century. The first, significant step in the direction of preservation and evaluation of the traditional and natural resources of this area was made in 1994. when the "Zvonejska fields" were granted the status of a registered monument of culture. This picturesque area also hides a natural treasure in the form of old indigenous varieties of agricultural cultures. One of them is a variety of Vine – Mast.
