House Belica Kastav

Interpretation center

The Belice House Interpretation Center introduces visitors to the winemaking, viticulture and cellaring tradition of the Kastav region as an important part of local life and identity of this region.

On the ground floor of Vikot's barrel factory, there is an exhibition of tools for making barrels and other wooden vessels, as well as the production of barrels, kegs, barrel barrels, cables and more.

The presentation section is spread over two floors and shows historical testimonies related to wine in this area. Stories about local wine are already mentioned in the medieval Kastav Law, which determines the taxes that local residents were obliged to pay in wine, and punishes its dilution. Anecdotes about wine and Kastav residents in the 17th century are also brought by the famous Slovenian polyhistor Valvasor.

A significant part of the exhibition is dedicated to Belica itself, the most representative Kastav wine, made from a blend of several local grape varieties: indigenous verdić, divjake, brajkovac, mejski and jarbola to which Malvasia is added, and the story of saving this important part of Kastav's tradition, which was on the verge of extinction at the end of the 20th century.

In addition to the visit and sightseeing of the museum, groups of visitors are also offered a tasting of Kastav wine and brandy in the courtyard of the aforementioned Vikot's barrel factory.

The House of Belice is the headquarters of the European Wine Knights Order, or rather the domicile house of the Legates for the Croatian Littoral and Istria.
